I think it's easier to tell you what is 'not nice' rather because only the 'nice' ones survive.

The prominent ones are listed in websites and you can find the list of restaurants if you google sin ming food.

http://www.hungrygowhere.com/search_res ... y=Location

Popular ones are at Blk 22, 23, 24 Sin Ming Road. Other than Ah Orh that opens at night (depends on his mood), those in the coffee shops open in the day. I think if you google according to these addresses, you can find the details. Sorry can't help you much... i don't frequent that area.

teochew porridge
yam stir fried in carrot cake style
roti prata from cluny road
ah orh seafood
bak kut teh

For good and reasonable price cze char dishes, Zui Fairprice at the corner of Upper Thomson Road and Sin Ming Road is quite good. I like their eel with tea leaves and Salted chicken especially, their coffee rib is pretty good too.

Pretty surprised too. They make a comeback not too long ago. I think parking is a problem along this stretch of the road.

Sorry, but that's the only thing I've tried there. Sin Ming is so far away for me...but the Thomson area looks like a restaurant boomtown!

Sometimes when I watch AFC, I catch Devagi, the TV cook with her restaurant at upper thompson rd. Has anyone tried the food at her restaurant?

Food's not too bad but on weeknights, the traffic is quite dismal.

Their curry fish head and mutton curry pretty good. For those that can't handle spicy food, please warn them in advance as the dishes can get pretty fiery.

:( It would be a pity if Devagi cannot survive. I like the curry fish head - value for money ($15). Drinks are unique and self-concoct. What is lacking in variety is the vege.

The mutton bryani is good too....but a bit ex for single serving.$9.90.

TTC, i had probably ordered the wrong dishes when i visited Zui Fairprice. 3 visits became 3 failures. What other recommendations do you have ? I tend to compare their Hakka salted chicken and yong tau foo with the Hakka restaurant at Jln Leban......probably that's why i didn't enjoy.

Morsels, carpark pblm yes. Cause of demise is $7000 increase in mthly rental.

If you didn't like what I liked as stated earlier in the thread, then afraid you are unlikely to like what else I would suggest. Just joking.

Although my fourth visit last week was a little disappointed ordering the same thing. The yau mak choy I ordered was too oily, the eel was a little too fishy, the lobster has some ammonia smell and the salted chicken was a little dry. Either their standard is not 100% consistent or I had a bad day that day ( yeah I did have a bad day :-? )

Do they serve YTF by the way ( might try next time) and I didn't know the Jln Leban Hakka restaurant serve salted chicken. Must go and try one day. :D

Yess ! Hakka Yong Tau Foo. I can't judge whether his cooking style is standard fare. Not a fan of YTF after all; besides I have other favourites screaming for my attention - salted chicken, jiu zao xia (stir fried prawns with red sorghum wine - sorry, i forgot the english name), yau mak choy and mei cai kou rou etc. This is one place, I never read the menu and I never want a bowl of rice (so that i can stuff myself silly). And i eat the same things over and over again for the last 10 yrs. :P

The restaurant is called Plum Village.

other recommendations:

1) kaya toast (french loaf and "fa bao" bread types available) same kopitiam as fried yam cake

2) bak chor mee, herbal soup (lunch time only) - kopitiam to next to bak ku teh

3) muffins, prawn noodles, hakka home made yam cake - shunfu fc

4) fish porridge from chuen chuen chicken rice - longhouse (this is a very surprising find!), very cantonese style, smooth and good consistency, wins hands down to Chinatown's Chang Cheng!

speaking of which do you know chang cheng has a branch at whampoa coffeeshop? very quiet, no business there.

Different style. Chang Cheng is rather Hainanese style in which the porridge is more "grainy", whereas Chuen Chuen is more congee than porridge. Sometimes I will order the plain porridge instead of rice to go with the chicken.

The branch of Chang Cheng has been around for a very long time, the standard is just as good and I prefer to go there because waiting time is lesser, the environment ( is the retrofitting over?) is better also.

The fried yam cake is at Sin Ming Road Block 23, same coffeeshop as the teochew porridge.

Basically, this stall serves yam, pumpkin and carrot cake and since the owner has a flat pan to fry the carrot cake, might as well use it the yam and pumpkin cake.

However, I prefer my yam and pumpkin cake to be at its original state - steamed
