It’s been three years since we brought this old retro street food carts concept from the Orchard carpark to its present premises at the Esplanade by the balmy alfresco Marina Bay area. We had a recent cosmetic makeover (in May 2010) to spruce and brighten things up a little but dared not re-invent the charming character of this cool, open-air with huge umbrella-ed seating eatery by the looming Marina skyline. We celebrate the original Singapore supper culture in her purest form- with all the noise, smells, cheerfulness, uncompromisingly authentic and interesting flavours, its laid back no-frills character and her friendly open-sky attitude to foodies of all ages, creed and race.

All our well loved classics are still churned out piping hot out of our “naked” performance cart kitchens. The old and highly touted Alhambra Padang Satay also dishes out a hearty Gado Gado salad replete with colourful crispies. These can all be nicely washed down with a cold glass of Sugar Cane Juice with lemon or if you like, a mean cup of hot Teh Tarek (pulled tea) or a very cold beer. You can also while some downtime away with a platter of our famous Roti Kaya Fondue with crispy toasted bread fingers all ready to be dipped in butter and our drippy, rich and daily-made Kaya, all at the Gluttons Bar & Sweet Spot.

Roti John |
We also hawk a Uniquely Singapore creation – the Roti John (egg and minced lamb loaf), which some claim is invented by an enterprising Malay chef to cater to his meat loaf loving western customers at the Esplanade Mee Goreng stall. Many local foodies still enjoy a great spicy platter of our Mee Goreng - a local creation of spicy sambal red fried noodles, by the Indians, which gels well with a cup of hot plain tea.
The Kampong Wok’s Nasi Lemak has a stinging sambal which to purist, is the “sadist” type- it bites but makes you want to have more, especially when mixed with their lightly coconutty rice. It’s strange, but the breakfast Fried Carrot Cake (at Huat Huat’s stall) is very popular for supper here (we suspect that it’s the unique white eggy pancake style that the old uncle does that makes it so devouringly appealing). If you want real family and friends restaurant meal sans the “overpriced” factor, then Sew An will delight with his repertoire of Cze Cha (street restaurant) dishes like fried hor fun and rice, steamed fresh fishes and even a stunning Chicken Chop with Apple Chilli Sauce.

Or, if you like it edgier, tear into the fearsome but delectable
BBQ stingrays (skate), sotong or sambal mussels from Boon
Tat Seafood, their addictive sambal sauce is almost illegal.
Of course, when the craving for local cult faves like Or Luak (oyster
omelette), Char Kway Teow or Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodles kicks in,
the deft wok masters at Soon Lee will satisfy you.
