The street food guide Makansutra
was first unleashed at the Singapore Food Festival in July
1998. Measuring about 10 by 18.5cm, this 275-page guide
was designed as a handy carry around and car dashboard accompaniment.
It was the result of a three-year research (aka conscientious
and methodic eating binge) of professional photographer
KF Seetoh. It has more than 700 street food and restaurants
recommended in an unbiased manner.
Working with a team of Makanmatas
(Food Police), led by his taste-buddy editor Moh Cher, a
little ardent gastronomic community was formed. These folks
come from across the threshold of society. Three times a
day, without the help of any little blue pills, they partake
with cult fervour, their pet vice - eating enjoyably. There
are retirees, a chef, an accountant, a lawyer, a hawker,
housewives, expatriates, an artist, your regular office
pen-pushers, taxi drivers, designers etc…who now have come
together to indulge in their favourite religion- eating
and sharing (not their food, but their love of our food
culture).
Through our food bible Makansutra,
we share with unabashed frankness with our unbiased rating
system of chopsticks - one chopstick (a pair) for "good"
to three for "die, die must try". The information and little
snippets about enjoyable eating in Singapore are as it is
and in-your-face and without the influence of the food and
beverage advertising dollar. Our Makanmatas now work,I
mean eat, undercover for Makansutra, for FREE! Not
a tough job for these fussy taste-buddies whose gastronomic
desires are simply to ensure that their favourite food,
from prata to pasta, will always be good, affordable and
enjoyable.
