Yummy chwee kueh… but available only three days a week

The Lowdown:

Look closely at their opening hours and business days and you kinda get the idea how popular these chwee kueh sellers are. These aren't some old fogies whose tickers can last them only four days a week of work. The last time I sank my teeth into their chwee kuehs for breakfast (heavenly breakfast stuff!), I would consider the same opening hours, if they were me. The queue was long, price is cheap and the taste is good….what more can any kiasu Singaporean want? But bear in mind, their work is manual (can't do a B2C!), the queue is impatient, the rewards are dismal and the work atmosphere is crummy. Any kiasu Singaporean would not want any of that.

But bless these folks for serving a chwee kueh so classic and simple in its own way. The texture is tight yet soft and does not give a bland and dry taste. This, with a simple chai po topping (not the over fried ,over oiled and too salty versions) constitutes a traditional classic. Best yet - the hawker centre is old and blissfully charming under the angsana trees that the atmosphere lends a classic ambience to this classic dish.
