Teochew Rice Cakes/ Teochew Png Kueh

An old lady quietly makes her fantastic rice cakes in an inconspicuous corner of the hawker centre

The Lowdown:

Not many will know about this quiet little stall located in an inconspicuous hawker centre, unless you are a resident living nearby. Teochew rice cakes are glutinous rice stuffed in a layer of pastry and then steamed for consumption. Some will lightly fry the steamed cakes for a crispy bite. The flour pastry is usually pink (due to the colouring) and sometimes white in its original colour. An old lady made her cakes at this stall. And, if you're not early enough, it's sold out pretty early!

Taste:

The filling that's made up of glutinous rice is very tasty. The rice is fried with shallots and dried prawns (hei bi) before being wrapped around by the pastry. The pastry is a thin layer that is smooth and slightly sticky. The filling is stuffed generously into the pastry until it appears as if it's bursting out of the pastry skin when you take your first bite!
