Bak kwa is something that once you start
eating, you just can't stop
The
Lowdown:
Chinese New Year (CNY)
is the time when you stop your calorie counting. It's the
time when you just want to enjoy yourself and indulge in all
the fattening CNY's goodies. So, it's the time of the year
again where you see queues almost everywhere at bak kwa (Barbecued
Dried Pork) shops. Just like pineapple tarts, love letters
and other goodies, bak kwa is something that once you start
eating, you just can't stop. This explains why people would
queue for hours just to buy 1 kg of bak kwa.
Lim Chee Guan is the
most popular bak kwa shop in Singapore. But if you don't have
at least 1 to 3 hours to spare at the queue, then we recommend
Kim Hock Guan that has a shorter queuing time but serves pretty
good bak kwa too.
Taste:
The bak kwa is not
made from minced pork at Kim Hock Guan but are whole slices.
The meat is quite tender but is not too soft, as good bak
kwa should be chewy. The meat slices have some fat on it and
adds to the taste. Most of the pieces are nicely grilled and
not too sweet. If you have bought your bak kwa for days and
want to tenderize them, just reheat them in the microwave
oven or steam them in a rice cooker.
