Get hold of Makansutra 2000!
Makansutra is in the Millennium Time Capsule!!!
Makansutra has become a piece in history. Handpicked from hundreds of shortlisted potential artefacts, Makansutra's made it to the 50 final items to be placed inside the Millennium Time Capsule. According to Miss Katherine Hor, the assistant curator at the Singapore History Museum, these 50 items are representative of life in present-day Singapore. Though some local recipe books were considered, the panel of decision makers which include media representatives and board members decided on Makansutra because they felt that Makansutra celebrates the food culture of Singapore as hawker food is close to the hearts of Singaporeans. And Miss Hor said that it was a journalist on the panel who suggested Makansutra-- no kelong (bribery) on our part--we were not one of the 92 Singaporeans who sent in the 229 suggestions on what to put in the Capsule!
Makansutra,
together with 49 other artefacts, will be placed inside the
Millenium Time capsule, to be preserved and buried on New
Year's Eve in front of the Singapore History Museum. The items
will only see the light of day in 2050, when the Time capsule
will be opened.
The Millennium Time Capsule project aims to carry a legacy of local life and achievements from this millenium to the next. This is an affirmation on what Makansutra is all about-- to glorify and promote Singapore's food culture.
So hurry, get a copy of Makansutra, hey! -- you will be holding on to a piece of Singapore's food history!
