The Lowdown:

Imagine this, a transparent mug of cappuccino, served before you in its naked beauty. Meaning that you get to see the triple layered concoction - a layer of hot milk, a layer of coffee and a thick head of froth (a la teh tarek style). The folks here at both these stalls have been selling this beverage for a few years now. The trend is catching on and a growing number of stalls (usually sarabat or mamak stalls) are touting it.

The subtle difference in the taste is partially in the coffee beans used. Sometimes different types of beans are mixed for a particular taste. Certain mixes give it a nice smoky flavour and another lends it a smooth finish.

Watching them prepare a mug of it is a joy (do sneak a peep when you are there for an order). Firstly, a jet of hot milk is shot in the mug till it is almost full. They usually shoot it off a tap attached to the huge circular steel containers where the different brews are stored. They actually "tarek" or pull the milk to create a full head of froth. Then, they pour in a thick shot of local coffee and it sits magically in the middle (because it's lighter than milk.).

They do this with tea, coffee, milo, horlicks, nescafe and whatever they have on the shelf!
