Apple Strudel

The Lowdown:
The
popular apple strudel from Corica at Perth has finally made
its way here. Now if you feel like having a piece of that
absolutely delightful apple strudel, you don't have to wait
for someone to bring it back from Perth. To satisfy your craving,
just head down to Renaldo's at Eastwood Road, off Upper East
Coast Road. But a word of advice -- try to make a reservation
to avoid disappointment. There are varying comments from people who have tried the apple strudel from both outlets. Some said that Corica is better while others insist that Renaldo's is an improvement over the original. So, which is better-- or are they as good as each other? We did a taste test and here are the comments of our makanmatas who are dessert experts.
At
first sight
Renaldo's serves a bigger portion with three decks of pastry while Corica has two decks. Both have two layers of cream and custard. Renaldo's has two layers of apples while Corica has one. The icing sugar is melted and there are less of it on Renaldo's strudel, whereas the icing sugar (not so melted) is generously laced all over Corica's.
Taste
Both pastries are light, crispy and puffy, though one day after, Renaldo's pastry remains puffy while Corica's went flat. As for the custard, Renaldo's is not sweet with a thinner texture. Corica has more custard and is slightly sweeter with a thicker texture. The cream from Corica is richer and more shiok (satisfying) to taste, maybe because it's fresh Aussie milk. The apples in the filling of custard and cream are crunchier at Renaldo's while Corica's apples are softer. On the whole, Renaldo's has more cream than custard while it's the reverse for Corica.
Concluding
Comments
Roy: The custard makes the difference between the two. My preference is Corica.
Simon: The cream, custard and apple filling from Corica has a richer taste. Perfect complement to the light and crispy pastry.
Karen: Light and crispy pastry texture is important to me--the fact that Renaldo's pastry is still good after one day gets my vote, though I must say that I prefer Corica's richer filling. The perfect combination will be Renaldo's pastry with Corica's filling!
Overall, as a dessert, Corica whips up a slightly sweeter version of apple strudel with more icing sugar and richer custard and cream. But, if you don't like desserts that are rich and sweet (--by the way, what are desserts if they're not sinfully rich and sweet?!), Renaldo's apple strudel will be your preference.
