Yong Tau Foo
An uncommon breakfast dish in Clementi HDB heartland--yong tau foo.
The Lowdown:
Armed with the strong recommendation of a Makanmata who is a great cook herself, we went looking for this stall one Saturday morning. We were amazed that the common breakfast dish at this coffeeshop was yong tau foo, a very uncommon breakfast dish indeed.
Taste:
How do you differentiate a good yong tau foo stall from the other? Fresh ingredients, tasty soup and special chilli and sweet sauce.
While all the vegetables, tofu, tau pok are fresh, we have never seen such generous and bulky fish paste stuffing that are stuffed into each piece of bitter gourd, tau pok, tau kwa, brinjal……
Every piece of yong tau foo is full of bite and when you dip it into the chilli and sweet sauce, you get a complete satisfactory taste of what good yong tau foo should be like. The sauces are fragrant to the smell while being tasty because the chilli sauce has hei bi (dried shrimps) in it and the sweet sauce has sesame seeds.
Though the soup is nothing to shout about, just plain and simple, this stall is worth a visit if you're sick of the frozen or mass produced ones and are longing for some good, freshly- made yong tau foo.
