Smelly Tofu

The Lowdown:

This is one dish for the lion hearted. It may be a bit of a problem if you have big nostrils. If blue cheese and bitter durian don't get you, this may.

Eat it while holding your breath and it's a crispy and hot piece of fried tofu. Eat it with your eyes closed and its like eating crispy fried tofu at the back of a rubbish truck.

Well, this chow taufu (fried fermented bean curd) is as stinky as it comes. The fermentation technique is horrendous - they have been known to ferment the tofu with fish, fowl or poultry innards under sealed lids, for days and weeks. When they open and retrieve this science project afterwards, the whole neighbourhood knows or rather, nose it. Which was why this stall had to relocate from their previous place at the Chinatown Food Centre. The neighbouring stalls cannot tahan (stand) the smell and complained. His stall was vandalised by some who truly cannot tahan.

If you can't let this dare slip you by, Mini Star Fermented Bean Curd is now located at 789 Geylang Rd (a shop all by themselves). At $2 a piece, it is actually quite tasty and smelly - FOR A TASTE SADIST LIKE ME! It comes with a stinging chilli (of course) and a little pack of pickled vegetables (I thinks that is what it takes to annul the smell).
