Qhue Restaurant

One of Singapore's "fusion" restaurants, where the dining experience is pretty consistent, from the food and drinks to the service and the ambience.

The Lowdown:

Although Qhue is commonly regarded as one of Singapore's "fusion" restaurants, representing a blend of Asian and western tastes, the cuisine it offers is definitely more western than Asian. That is not to say it isn't up to scratch, in fact it's one of the few restaurants in Singapore where the dining experience is pretty consistent, from the food and drinks to the service and the ambience.

The ambience is excellent - a converted end of terrace shophouse, transformed into a cosy and unique restaurant. Qhue offers an intriguing choice of dining in a rustic al fresco courtyard, or a romantic attic retreat up some windy stairs. It also possesses a fine 30s style bar in which to unwind from the rigours of the office, before easing into the meal. The architectural style blends Asian colonial with what I can only describe as a broadly southern European simplicity.

The service was polite but uneven with a gushing and overly opinionated greeter -"May I suggest the steak tonight, it has been marinated in goat's milk and tenderised with a camphor wood hammer hacked from the jungles of Borneo.. etc etc.." replaced by an innocently blur novitiate of the " Wine ah? Can check first?" variety. Still, the genuine politeness was a change from the norm, and the prices were certainly pretty good value (between $30-50 each).

The only real negative was the lighting in the attic dining room. No doubt designed to be romantic, it was too dark to see the food on your plate properly, let alone your lover!
